Karkonosze is the biggest and the highest massif around the Sudetes area.
The total area of Karkonosze amounts to 650 km2, 1/3 of which (around 185 km2) belongs to Polish territory. The highest peak of Karkonosze – Śnieżka (1603 m. above sea level) – is the only one in Sudetes that exceeds 1600m. 15 of 21 Sudetes’s peaks that reach higher than 1400 m. are located in Karkonosze.
From the geological viewpoint Karkonosze Mountains belong to a huge unit called the Karkonosze and Izery block, which is mainly composed of Izery Foothills and Mountains, the Valley of Jelenia Góra and Rudawy Janowickie.
